Chapter Fifteen

Alex had been acting weird all day, but he looked happy and seemed to have a lot of energy. He had promised to deliver some good news later. Was it another assignment like the Crown Room? Mia was curious and wondered why Alex couldn’t tell her during work hours. Was he going to recommend her for a newspaper in San Diego or LA?

Alex had left early and said he’d call or text her later in the evening. He wasn’t controlling the time she had to go home. That was a first.

A little after five, Mia drove home, took off her shoes and found a note from Joe in the key hook by the door. They had gotten into the habit of leaving little notes when they couldn’t see each other during the entire day.

Mia grabbed the paper and read it.

Hungry?

I left something for you in the fridge.

Enjoy!

Joe

Eggplant lasagna was her favorite, and Joe knew how to make it to perfection.

“Thank you, Joe!” she said to the empty kitchen. She missed spending more time with her brother, but after work she was too tired to go to Tapitas. Joe wouldn’t let her help anyway.

She heated up her dinner and poured herself a tall glass of pineapple juice. Had Alex forgotten about her?

At that very moment, her phone chimed with a text message. She tapped on it.

Alex.

Can I pick you up at six thirty? On my way to Coronado.

Why was she grinning? This was work. After hours, but still work.

Mia had told Joe about her conversation with Alex and the reasons why she had been fired. While at the beginning, he’d seemed surprised that working hard could be a reason for dismissal, he agreed that the issues regarding liability are like that, and the law is the law, even when it doesn’t make sense sometimes.

She lifted a forkful to her mouth and chewed slowly, enjoying the flavor. She wondered whether Alex liked eggplant lasagna. She still hadn’t responded to his text.

Mia touched the screen and his message popped up again.

She tapped her reply:

Sounds good. Eating dinner now. See you soon.

She set the phone down on the table and smiled, thinking of Alex.

The more she saw him, the more she wanted to see him.

Something had changed recently.

She was scared.
